Why Summer Sunrises Are Sabotaging Your Child's Sleep (and what to do about it)

If your child has suddenly started waking at 5am as the days have lengthened, you're not imagining it, and you're probably not causing it either. There's a well-documented biological reason summer mornings wreak havoc on children's sleep, and understanding it is the first step to fixing it.

The body clock runs on light, not on the clock on the wall
Every human has an internal timekeeper called the circadian clock, based in a tiny region of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Its job is to keep every system in the body (hormone release, body temperature, alertness and sleep) running on a roughly 24-hour cycle. But the SCN doesn't know what time it is on its own. It relies almost entirely on light to stay synchronised with the actual day.
Specialised cells in the retina detect light and send that information straight to the SCN. When light hits those cells in the morning, it sends a "start the day" signal that shifts the whole system earlier, what sleep scientists call a phase advance. Evening light does the opposite, delaying the clock. This is why bright light first thing in the morning is often used to help people struggling with delayed body clocks, and it's exactly why an early, bright summer sunrise can quietly retrain a child's body clock to wake-up earlier and earlier.
Children are more light-sensitive than adults
Here's the part most parents don't realise: children aren't just as sensitive to this effect as adults, they're even more sensitive. Research on preschool-age children has found a robust melatonin-suppressing response to light exposure, and part of the reason is anatomical. Young children have more transparent lenses and larger pupils than adults, meaning more light physically reaches their retina for a given light level in the room. Their circadian systems are, quite literally, wired to respond more strongly to whatever light is available.
So when a 5am sky starts glowing around the edges of an unlined curtain in June, a child's system may be receiving a far stronger "wake up" signal than an adult would get from the same light. Over days and weeks, this can genuinely shift a child's internal clock earlier, reinforcing the very early waking pattern parents are trying to break.
The surprising bit: eyelids don't fully block light
This is the detail that tends to surprise parents most: light doesn't need open eyes to reach the circadian system. A landmark study found that a bright light pulse delivered through closed eyelids could still suppress melatonin, the hormone that helps maintain sleep. Follow-up research using light delivered directly through the eyelid found melatonin suppression and measurable shifts in circadian timing, even though participants' eyes stayed shut throughout.
The eyelid does block a large majority of light, but not all of it, and what does get through still reaches photoreceptors capable of signalling to the brain's clock. There's also emerging research showing that skin itself contains light-sensitive proteins (opsins) that may play a role in the body clock, independent of the eyes. The practical takeaway isn't that skin exposure is driving early waking in a meaningful way for most families, but it does explain why a child can still show a circadian response to a bright room even while asleep, eyes closed, under a duvet. Light doesn't wait for someone to open their eyes before it starts influencing the body clock.
Why this matters more in summer
Two things stack up against parents during summer months. First, sunrise creeps earlier and earlier. In much of the UK, by the height of summer the sky is genuinely light well before 5am. Second, that early light tends to be more intense, since a clear summer sky at dawn is far brighter than a grey winter morning. Combine a child's heightened light sensitivity with an earlier and brighter dawn, and you have a near-perfect setup for a body clock that gradually creeps earlier and earlier across the summer.
What actually helps
The good news is that because this is a light-driven pattern, it responds well to light-based solutions.
Get the room properly dark. This is the single biggest lever. A "dark enough for an adult to feel it's dim" room is often nowhere near dark enough for a child's more sensitive system. Look for genuine blackout blinds or curtains — the kind that block light around the edges and top of the window, not just the centre of the pane. Portable blackout blinds with suction cups are useful for framing gaps that fixed curtains miss.
Address light leaks, not just the main window. Landing lights under doors, gaps around curtain rails, and even the glow from a hallway can matter more than parents expect, given how sensitive to light young children are.
Keep some daytime light exposure consistent. The circadian system responds to a full pattern of light and dark across the day, not just what happens at the edges of sleep. Regular exposure to daylight during waking hours helps keep the clock well anchored, so the early morning light has less power to shift things.
Be patient with the transition. If early waking has already crept in, a fully dark room won't undo it overnight. The circadian clock shifts gradually, so expect a gentle, incremental improvement over one to two weeks of consistently blocking that morning light, rather than an immediate fix.
